How are Kaoru Satsuma Kiriko earrings made?
It embodies incredibly advanced techniques and the spirit of the artisans.
First, two artisans transform the discolored glass beads into uniform, pipe-shaped glass rods.
To prevent the glass rods from twisting, perfect synchronization is required.
If the rotation speed is too fast or too slow, the resulting product will not be usable.
Afterward, the tip of the glass rod is heated with fire, melted, and shaped into a round form.
This process requires not only highly advanced techniques but also the meticulous care of infusing life into the glass.
Once completed, the glass is slowly annealed overnight.
The glass bead, with its preliminary pattern drawn, is cut using a diamond wheel.
This task requires extreme concentration as the glass bead is very small and slippery.
It is a technique that only Shimadzu Satsuma Glassworks can master.
Carefully checking each cut, the pattern is meticulously refined, resulting in the completion of the representative Satsuma Kiriko design, the ‘Kiku-mon’ (Chrysanthemum pattern).
Creating a cavity inside the tiny glass fragrance bead to apply essential oils, and engraving delicate cuts on its surface, is no easy task.
It requires the incredibly advanced skills and passion of master artisans.
Only then does Kaoru Satsuma Kiriko come into existence.
